Outside In

The Outside In series celebrates popular culture with critical analyses of all kinds – from reviews to recipes, scripts to science experiments, interviews to infographics…

Contributions have included chapters on Star Trek, Doctor Who, Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The X-Files, and more. Final products include standard text chapters and creative formats such as scripts, diaries, instruction manuals, song lyrics, and job postings.

The DNA of Doctor Who

A large-format coffee table book exploring the Philip Hinchcliffe era of #DoctorWho. Published by Room 5064 Enterprises, edited by Gary Russell, and personally overseen by Philip Hinchcliffe.

The Brain of Morbius: Real science versus fantasy science in the Hinchcliffe years,” focuses on Gothic horror, scientific plausibility, and the conflict between fearing and pursuing knowledge.

FAC:ABC

A silly rhyming picture book alphabet about the musical greats (and not-so-greats) of Factory Records, Manchester’s revolutionary post-punk record label.

This showpiece book features an illustration, short rhyme, and informational blurb for each letter of the alphabet. Endorsed and advertised by artists mentioned in the book, including New Order, Crispy Ambulance, Vini Reilly, and others.

FUBAR Comics

A New York Times bestselling graphic novel series, FUBAR features zombies throughout history. From World War II to medieval England, the past isn’t dead… but it may be undead.

“Daddy’s Home” was first published as a standalone bonus comic to accompany FUBAR: Empire of the Rising Dead, which debuted at #6 on the New York Times bestseller list. Additional contributions appear in FUBAR: American History Z, FUBAR: By the Sword, and FUBAR: Mother Russia.

Outré Press

The Outré graphic anthology bases each issue on a theme. Stories must be exactly eight pages long, but genre, tone, and style are up to the creators. Submissions are highly competitive; only two issues  (four stories each) are published each year.

“Dying for a Smoke” appears in issue #5, which is themed around desire. Other themes have included responsibility, hopelessness, xenophobia, silence, and other challenging aspects of being human.

Memoirs of the Mysterious

This graphic novel anthology is a collection of short stories in the vein of The Twilight Zone, The Outer Limits, and EC Comics. Each tale weaves narratives from mystery and sci-fi to horror and strange slice-of-life (and there’s always a twist at the end).

“Thy Will Be Done” is one of several appearances in this anthology series that collects four- to six-page suspense stories.

What Would Joe Strummer Do?

An advice blog for young people in 1970s punk rock style. Each answer is written in the voice of a Joe Strummer-style rocker and accompanied by a related sketch.

This advice blog was created in response to an unmet need in the youth punk rock community and provided support and an outlet for people who didn’t feel comfortable seeking help in person.

Choose Your Own Avenger: The Mission

An online “choose your own adventure”-style book with a Marvel theme, commissioned with a special focus on minor characters from both the comics and the cinematic universes.

This style of book, which closely mimics the classic 1980s and 1990s series, requires extensive planning to link storylines and maintain logical flow. The online version features 188 pages, 39 possible endings, 31 two-way choices, and six three-way choices.
